Jay Fosgitt Does It Again: Fan Art Designs Used in Comic by

Jay Fosgitt, who is no stranger to rather scummy art choices that are often illegal or lazy, appears to have done it again. In the Guardians of Harmony Annual (actually not that bad, as an aside) Fosgitt decided to have the climax of the final section include a power-up sequence where the Mane Six get armor. Problem is, he cribbed the design directly from a fanartist, Equestria-Prevails.

Equestria-Prevails, who drew the original in 2011, gave the ponies unique headgear and armor elements that Fosgitt appears to have directly "referenced" without attribution.

The original picture
Interestingly, and echoing a recurring theme for Fosgitt, Equestria-prevails' image happens to show up on the first page of Google Image search for "my little pony armor":

Given Hasbro's very aggressive policy towards IP protection/avoidance of fan content, this seems like something that would be very worrying for them. Considering that Fosgitt has at least one more comic confirmed, and that there is a dearth of MLP artists anyway, it might just fade away like every other controversy involving him, such as his use of clipart for a pony's cutiemark. Time will tell. We will keep you updated on further developments.

Equestria-prevails has responded, and it's rather confusing that he doesn't seem to care very much. Fosgitt himself has yet to reply:

Ooookay.
Fosgitt will however be at Emerald City Comic Con this weekend for any of you to ask questions, or even give him some sympathy for his ponies stricken in their prime with boneitis:

How does this even happen?
Oh, and the Guardians of Harmony toys didn't even have armor for anyone except Twilight and Spike. What the fuck.

  1. Look, at this point is fucking obvious that nobody at IDW gives a fuck anymore because they already know they get that sweet Hasddrone and IDWanker money no matter if they shit on them with such crappy comics.

  2. So,Equestria-Prevails dont give a shit so congrats on getting offended on her/his behalf i guess
Also apparently, that fanartist has patented the use of golden armours on ponies,an armor THAT IS STRICKINGLY SIMILAR TO THE PONYGUARDS
Hope you stroked that IDW hateboner enough to your liking, you can go to Derpibooru where the usual confederacy of dunces offended over a comic they blatantly admit to notread/read 4FREE on 4Chan while join on stroking that humongous hateboner of yours assuming there's enough people to care

    1. How dare fans care about quality?!

    3. I must assume you are either an IDW asskisser or Jay Fosgitt under an Anonymus name.

    4. Different Anon; have to say that in this case the original artist was okay with it, so no harm no foul. However, it is still really shitty business practice though.

    5. Pone was never about quality, it's always about the plot and ponut.

    6. If it was never really about quality then how come the franchise and this generation lasted so long, with G4 being the longest so far?

    7. Because autistic manbabies, easily entertained by bright colors and repetition. That, what it has always truly been about, for all kinds of product franchises: marketing prowess.

Good job comparing those people to Albert Einstein genius, those people definitely are smarter than you are and you obviously haven't seen the show.

    10. This whole fandom was built around the so-bad-it's-good trope when it comes to fandom production and projects. I don't see why IDW is any different.

    11. I've never seen a single person call 'Snowdrop', 'My Little Dashie', 'Discord' or any overhyped garbage 'so-bad-it's-good'. I do, however, see them fawn over it like it would be the epitome of perfection for a fancontent.

      Delete
    12. Why would they? If they see it as perfect there isn't a way to claim it is so bad it is good. That being said those that you've listed are pretty good but also an insanely small portion of the content this fandom generates. I don't have a metric for it but with social media I tend to see a few trends. Nowadays I am under the impression that with the exception of just plain bad everything else, notably official toys, we enjoy regardless of how good it is.

    13. pretty much this. the canon armors have similar details, and both designs are an extension of the what is already there. and other fanart has similar kinds of armor as well. being offended over nothing

  3. Honestly I think now is the time to contact Hasbro and tell them what Jay Fosgitt has done, and do one of two things (maybe both):

    1. Fire that talentless, horrible, pathetic hack of an artist known as Jay Fosgitt, even though his art here is slightly better than it was in previous issues.

    2. Try to convince Hasbro to terminate their partnership with the new LJN known as IDW, or have them threaten to terminate the partnership to hopefully scare the company into actually producing quality stuff.

Seriously, this is a new low, at least the show, despite season 5 only being OK and season 6 being bad managed to produce some good quality episodes there. IDW just, doesn't give a fuck anymore, they're all like "who cares? As long as the comic says "My Little Pony" on it, people will want it" and frankly if I were Equestria-prevails I would try to sue Jay/IDW.

I don't even know if the Guardians of Harmony annual is worth reading anymore or not (only got the Pinkie toy)...is it?

    1. You could try a lawsuit, however Hasbro still owns the IP so the case probably wouldn't end well for the artist (the artist still used Hasbro's characters without permission, so it doesn't really matter).

      Delete
    2. I see :P

Just wondering though, is this annual still worth buying/reading?

  4. Eh, not the first time a fanmade design made it into something supposedly-official if the concern is IP protection and avoidance of fan content. If anyone's seen some of the toys recently the GoH Soarin/Spitfire uses a fanmade, pre-Wonderbolts Academy Spitfire cutie mark from years ago (lightning bolt symbol burning on the bottom), and the Wonderbolts Cloudsdale Mini Collection set has a Spitfire modeled after a piece of fan vector art (Spitfire from the S1 finale wearing the suit but the hood is removed, though with some further editing). Probably more before that.

Just an aside, the Shining Armor GoH toy has armor (I own it myself), but I can understand if you meant by "anyone" you meant the rest of the M6. I haven't read the comic so I wouldn't know if Shining Armor makes an appearance in his toy-fit.

Otherwise I agree with a lot of this article.

  5. I'm still surprised people can still manage to defend him at this point. Given his track record I can't see how anyone can't see him as a lazy as fuck artist.

    1. Honestly I say the people who defend him don't even know what makes good quality at all...even I can draw better than Fosgitt myself and I can only use pencil, pen and colored pencils.

      Delete
  6. Eh. The artist isn't concerned. I don't see why anyone else should be. They made art with Trademarked characters without permission from Hasbro. Yeah it would be nice if people asked each other permission but since they didn't I don't see why Hasbro should have to.

    1. So you approve of this behavior?

      Delete
    2. Because for being a "professional" artist, Fosgitt's art is lazy as hell.

      -Incorrect Antatomy
-Having ignoring references he's given and drawing whatever the hell he feels like (Greta and Wonderbolts Guardians of Harmony figures for examples)
-Photoshopping a goddamn egg whisk on a pony for their cutie mark

    3. Getting offended on another's behalf is the cult of the eternally offended's stock in trade. its either to start shit, or for their own entitlement, or an excuse to bitch.

  9. It's lazy and dumb as hell, but not illegal. Hasbro owns the IP and this was a recreation, not a direct copy-paste. He is not legally in the wedding here.
