Peter New's Ponyville Ciderfest Incident Report by

So, by now, most people have heard about the incident that occurred at Ponyville Ciderfest involving Peter New and a fan who frequents the /mlp/ board on 4chan. An individual posted a photograph of Peter New using a urinal in a bathroom at the convention. Many people were expecting HN to hop on this story like it was a bottle of Fiji in the Desert, but were shocked when we said...nothing.

Well, simply put, we were waiting for the other side of the story to come in, with some sort of verifiable source (We especially are no strangers to convention mishaps, or upsetting show staff, though we've never done something like this).
Ultimately it did, and upon reading the party in question's recounting of events, we feel as though they deserve to be posted publicly.

http://www.peternew.net/2015/11/24/thank-you-you-know-who-you-are/
Peter New's recounting of the incident is here on his website, it is too long to copy the entire thing, but we shall include the following passages:

Ego, too, though I wonder here if you lost a bit of foresight with the lesson you were trying to teach me. My ego is healthy enough. Some might say too healthy. Alas, you taught me that I’m so important to you that it’s worth owning a picture of me urinating. And more than that, I’m so important and meaningful to you that you felt like all your 4chan friends would be impressed by you because you got to be near me in a bathroom while I had my cock in my hand. And some of them are impressed, too! Wowzers. So many people impressed that celebrities piss too! I want to congratulate you and all your – I’m sorry I’m not up on the lingo for what to call loathsome 4chan anons; I’ve heard “losers” but I was pretty sure “nitwits…’ I’m going with: dickwits: ego boosted, though like I say, I don’t know if it needed it. In any case. It’s a win for you.
Lastly, I want to thank you for violating me. And it was a violation. Totally. I know because I feel embarrassed, hurt, angry, confused, like it’s my fault, and all of the things someone usually feels when they’ve been assaulted. I’m grateful because it opened my eyes to the inequality within me. See it never even occurred to me to call the police because I’m a man. It wasn’t until it was pointed out to me later that if you had creeped on any of the women the way you creeped on me, the first thing would have been to call the police. And it’s thanks to you that I’m ready to do that next time. Also it’s thanks to you that I’ll be taking stricter precautions: no more going to the same toilets as fans. Or perhaps I’ll have bathrooms cleared for me and guarded while I’m in them. And maybe I should go all out and insist on cons having a police presence.Or I may just cancel all further appearances. I’m considering it all, thanks to you.

It is clear from these remarks that New feels strongly about what occurred. Here, we provide what was said by the subject in question. We have not altered the content in any way from how it was provided to us.

Events as they happened:
The cast being me, Yanon, Banon, Ranon, and Fanon. So I met up with everyone Friday morning through the thread (I hung out with a dozen new anons that weekend it was crazy) those 4 included and we were all chilling and such. Y and B were fans of peter and wanted to get a picture/talk with him. They are poor so they opted to go to the tub panel in which peter was going to get drunk and sit in a tub with not much clothing/casual wear on (the panel was supposed to recreate some other tub thing that happened at another con). They figured that it would be a good chance to meet him in an informal atmosphere. Well they went and I spoke with them after they got back. They said it was silly and they had too much to drink and they were too awkward/there was never really a good chance to meet and get a pic with him because it was pretty crowded. They did take pictures of his antics including the time he walked out in his socks to go to the bathroom. They showed me the picture in question which B took and Y posted it in the thread.
Throughout the night and next morning people in the thread were talking about it a little and someone suggested they should get it signed. Someone (probably B or R) was talking with some person that knew peter and said he would think it was funny (that he pissed in his socks) and offered to get it printed. People in the thread goaded him on and R eventually decided to show peter (whether he just showed him the pic on his phone or a printout I’m not sure). R came to me later and said Peter wasn’t happy about it and he felt bad. I spoke with VIP staff and no one said he had complained about it so I told R that it was fine and to forget about it. Later in the day I hear from F that people were showing him the picture at the VIP cocktail party when he was flirting with some chick and he got all upset and started telling this story to people about how some creep snapped a photo of him. The conversation proceeded down the “oh those 4channers are passing around a creep picture making fun of you.” “What neckbeard no-life scum.” Etc. And he started telling a couple people about it and the story became more and more embellished.
I mentioned that to Y, B, and R and told them to not mention anything because Peter could overreact. That was when B posted the apology that everyone has been capping and sharing. Later in the Sunday thread R and B expressed how bad they felt and were depressed about Peter getting upset about it. They thought he would laugh and were just bummed about the whole deal. We discussed it in person and came to the conclusion no one could have seen them and no one knew so they weren’t in any trouble. There are maybe 3 other people outside the five of us who know who it was and 2 of them are close personal friends of mine. A day later peter new posts the rant.

If what this person claims is true, then the incident - while still bad - would be less rooted in malice and more rooted in very poor judgement.

Now is the part where you expect us to take a stand on the incident, and to that we say "why?" Make your own opinions. Is Peter New justified in his anger or is he inflating the situation? Should the anonymous individual provide a formal apology? Is all of this really, really dumb?

Fight it out in the comment section.

  1. That second paragraph from New's website has to become a copypasta.

  2. This is harsh on the part of the photographer. New is justified in his suggestions of private bathroom, clear and guard, or refusing appearances. His morale as a working member of the cast of this show is now going to be forever changed because of this incident. Sure he'll record, but his presence at cons will be staccato at best.

Mr. Larson? He'll run right up and jump in your picture, or photo-bomb you, drink at the bar and chat. I am afraid that with this incident, we burn any bridge, hope, semblance of hope, or friendship with New.

If you get to reading this at all Mr. New. I've not been able to attend many conventions, and you were at one I think I attended. Sorry I won't be able to be seen in the same light. This incident sucks the life out of me to even read it. I'd like to apologize (I'm Canadian, what can I do? It's in my nature) for this ridiculous, and un-needed act of idiocy.

Hope to see you attending cons in the future, though.

    Cheers

    1. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Now... ideally I'd love for the anon to learn something, change his ways and be forgiven (much as happens quite a lot in the show). A personal apology would probably go a long way, regardless of how angry Peter New is at this. I don't necessarily think the anon is a bad person, I think most people are decent by default but do a lot of dumb shit and hurt others because it's what humans do (especially when drunk). But we also acknowledge when we've been twats, apologise and learn to do better.

That doesn't however mean that New is obliged to accept any apology even if it happened. By rights he could probably sue for harassment and at a push under the circumstances I imagine a good lawyer could spin it as sexual. He's been violated and has every right to be upset. I'm not going to attempt to compare its severity with sexual assault as that would be dumb, but to some degree the emotional impact is there - I really don't think he'd have posted that blog post if he wasn't deeply troubled by it.

If you ever read this Peter, there are still loads of us trying to be decent and who are on your side, hopefully you see more of us and less of the idiocy.

  3. Capper, you managed get information from the person who allegedly took the photo. How did you figure out who it was in order to contact them? How did you verify it was them?

I could do with the advice.

  6. What can you expect from pony convention goers who get shitfaced on alcohol a day before the con and then all weekend? Sperging drunks are the worst. And fags like the one who took the photo are prime examples that socially retarded ponyfuckers need to stay indoors, away from me and maybe everyone else.

    1. Allowing drunk+disorderly people at events like this is a bad idea period. (That includes everyone - I'd expect a drunken and disorderly VIP to be turned away too). The last couple of conventions I went to were quite explicit in the rules that yes you can get a beer in the venue - we have loads of shy people in the fandom and it can help those loosen up a bit for example - but if you get shitfaced and start sperging then you're going to get ejected.

  12. >The reason why we didn't say anything is because we were waiting for the other side of the story to come in.
    Bullshit.
You weren't waiting for anything. In fact, you didn't give two shits about the incident, and so many other HN members. You were afraid that HN won't be able to get anymore interviews with him or his friends, as he explicitly mentioned it himself. You were waiting for it to die down hoping that the fire would go off to keep your reputation and get more celebrity insights.

Now, I don't know why it's just now that you talked about it. I mean, you could have it like an "on-going" post that is constantly updating for new things. The point is, your reasoning on being delayed is inconsistent with what you said on /mlp/. Not even a single tweet regarding the matter.

    1. Does Capper not realize that we saw him posting on 4chan saying that he didn't want to cover this story and not piss off New? Does he think we're as stupid as him?

    2. >afraid of not getting more interviews with him or his friends
That's great Except for a few things
1 - our interviews are some of the least-read posts on the site, we dont really care if we dont get to do them, theyre just fun when we do
2 - Peter would not likely ever do an interview with us anyway
3 - I'm on the other side of the goddamned planet until further notice and will not likely ever be doing another pony interview again
4 - It's not inconsistent with what I said, as you can tell by my lack of opinion in the story I really don't care, but when we were contacted by the individual we believed they should have the chance to tell their side of the story WHEN they did finally send it to us, which took a few days of email tag.
We didn't tweet about it because we didn't know for sure that it was ever going to actually arrive.
      So yeah.

    3. Not that guy but, based on your post from /mlp/, it did sound like you do care.

You care about Horse news not being able to interact with staff anymore.
You do care about interviews, because otherwise, that post you made wouldn't be so centered towards horse news' integrity to be able to talk to staff.
It wouldn't be about getting worried that if the drama goes on, you'd lost the priveledge to talk to staff.

    4. If your news site cares so little about interviews, why did you get so ass-ravaged that EQLA didn't give you interviews?

      Delete
    5. Except it was every media group that got stiffed, because a lot of it had to do with EQLA allowing people to apply for press passes, for the purpose of having interviews - and then at the end made it all but impossible to actually use them. If they didn't want interviews in the first place, they should have said up front, "No press."

Sure, it would have been a bummer, but at least they would have been honest about it. Instead, they start dicking around with every media group that is not former EFN. That is what the issue was.

  14. What the photographer did is voyeurism, and is punishable by jail time in the state of Wisconsin. Peter is 100% justified in reacting the way he did, and regardless of whether or not it was malicious, this person should be brought to the police.

    2. Yes, If anyone had taken a picture of Andrea, Ashleigh, or Nicole peeing in a urinal there would indeed have been an uproar.

    3. And if this had been a female that took that picture, no one would be giving a shit and laughing about it all.

  15. While I do agree with Capper and that this seems to be piss-poor judgment rather than actual malice, the point of the matter is somebody was offended, and it's best if the offending party offers a formal apology.
